If you have a damaged caned chair with an edge that looks like the one in the photo, you can easily replace the caned area in this one-day class. Simple tools, glue, and machine-woven cane are about all that is necessary, along with the piece of furniture you’re restoring. Please remove all traces of the old spline and caning prior to class.
Student supply list and information:
- Bring your chair with the old seat removed and the groove cleaned out. Use a spline chisel or small screw driver to clean groove. Vinegar will help to dissolve the old glue.
- Bring a replacement pressed cane sheet that is 1-2 inches larger than the groove.
- Spline for the groove. Measure the width and length of the groove and purchase correct size for the width of the groove. Allow an extra 1” in length.
- Spline wedges
- Hide glue or a good wood glue
- Small, SHARP, wood chisel
- Mallet
- Rags or sponge
