Two Exhibitions on the Way!

TIAC ANNOUNCES WINTER TEXTILE EXHIBITIONS

Clayton, NY, USA - October 17, 2018 -  The Thousand Islands Arts Center is delighted to host simultaneous exhibitions this winter, Weaving Past into Present, and Variety is the Spice of Life: The Works of Nan Smith, on display November 14, 2018 - January 25, 2019.

The Johnson Gallery will present the Canadian weavers collective “Weavers Unlimited” and their exhibition Weaving Past Into Present. In celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial 150th anniversary, the group explored their cultural backgrounds and connection to their country through weaving. Using a modern approach, each member wove a shawl reflecting and interpreting their own unique heritages. Visitors to the exhibit will learn about the connection between the weaver and the shawl, and will also gain knowledge about the process involved with each of their creations.

Variety is the Spice of Life: The Works of Nan Smith, on exhibit in the Trimble Gallery, will highlight the career of embroiderer and needlecraft enthusiast Nan Smith. Taught to embroider stamped linens at the age of 10, Nan continued to hone her skills into adulthood by learning numerous needle and thread techniques. A resident of Fisher’s Landing, NY, Nan has often drawn inspiration from the St. Lawrence River and her home there. Her collection of samplers not only demonstrates her technical mastery of stitches, but also reflects scenes from her life on the river. Her embroidered Christmas ornaments, as well as some of her jackets and vests, will also be on display.

The opening reception for the two exhibitions is Wednesday, November 14th, from 4 – 5:30 pm at the Arts Center located at 314 John Street in Clayton, and open Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm.  The exhibition is free and open to the public.
